What is sound healing and how does it work?

Sound has been used as a healing modality as early as 2000 B.C. and across many cultures. We've seen evidence of sound healing with Egyptians and Greeks. Our ears are the FIRST developed sense while in the womb. It's the LONGEST functioning sensory organ. What we feed ourselves (audio included) alters our state of being. Ever notice how music or hearing a familiar voice alters your being? The nerves within our ears are connected to EVERY nerve in our body, impacting our entire being whether we're conscious of it or not. The brain is made up of billions of neurons that communicate with each other through electrical impulses. These impulses are called brainwaves. Our brains produce different types of electrical patterns (brainwaves), which are measured in hertz (Hz), or cycles per second. Brainwave frequency determines what state we’re in, from deep sleep to vigorous activity.

Sound therapy or sound-based relaxation techniques are known for helping people reduce stress, anxiety, and to fall asleep. Water is 70% of our bodies, 95% of our brains, and 82% of our blood. Sound travels 5x faster in water than in air, making it possible for sound to alter our inner beings, promoting states of calm, rest, and optimal health. Over time, these therapies can also help you permanently change your brainwaves. This is why sound therapy has been used for years to help people improve their mental health, overcome insomnia, chronic pain, and generally improve their quality of life.

What are the side effects to sound healing?

During a sound bath, some sense tingling, sensations of heat or cold, and even visual color. Others may experience a decrease in heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure, emotional release, or a sense of clarity. It is not uncommon to experience a headache or the release of one. You may hear ringing in your ears. You may cry, or even relax and ease into sleep. Each experience is different. The key is to be open to receive from the healing vibrations and allow what comes up to also go. Those with pacemakers are not encouraged to attend sound baths as the vibrations can impact your device.

What is Reiki and how does it work?

Reiki is a holistic healing technique that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. It is based on the belief that there is a universal life force energy that flows through all living beings. Reiki practitioners harness and channel this energy to promote healing, relaxation, and overall well-being. The word "Reiki" is derived from two Japanese words: "Rei," which means universal or spiritual, and "Ki," which means life force energy, also known as Qi or Prana in other cultures. Reiki can be administered through physical distance, light touch, or by holding the hands near the recipient's body, with the practitioner acting as a conduit for the energy. The belief is that Reiki energy can help remove energy blockages and promote the free flow of life force energy, which can lead to physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Reiki is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatment and is not intended as a replacement for medical care.

While scientific evidence on Reiki's efficacy is limited, those with chronic pain, illness, and cancer have seen improvements with Reiki. Many individuals report feeling a sense of relaxation, reduced stress, and improved well-being after Reiki sessions. As a Reiki level II practitioner, I have undergone training and attunements to become a practitioner. The practice of Reiki is based on principles of compassion, intention, and the belief in the innate ability of the body to heal itself when the flow of energy is balanced and harmonious.

How do I know if I need a Death and Bereavement Doula?

Death doulas do not provide medical or nursing care, but work alongside healthcare professionals to complement their services. Their role is rooted in the belief that a peaceful and conscious transition from life to death can enhance the quality of the dying experience and help individuals and their families find comfort and closure during a challenging time. Anyone experiencing the end-of-life of a significant loved one can greatly benefit from having me stand beside them through such a difficult time.

I provide emotional support, education and advocacy, and comfort measures like gentle touch, music, aromatherapy, and sound baths. In our time together, we discuss legacy work, like creating memories, recording messages, and leaving a beautiful legacy behind. I support with creating vigil services and after-death care to the bereaved. My support varies per family, as I am flexible to the unique experiences and needs of each.
